In today’s world, various acts of terrorism are promoted and facilitated through different digital platforms, including the internet, social media, and other forms of electronic communication devices. This type of terrorism is called digital terrorism and has adversely affected every corner of the world. Digital terrorism makes use of numerous technological devices to pull off its primary objectives, such as spreading propaganda, recruiting members, coordinating attacks, and instilling fear in the population.
Historical Context:
Countless modifications are witnessed in terrorist activities with every passing decade. The world saw its evolution from traditional acts of violence to sophisticated cyber strategies. Digital terrorism is mainly beneficial for extremist groups, as their main target is to propagate radical ideologies and exploit vulnerable people. In this globalized world, terrorists need not put in the utmost effort to fulfill their target, which they had to set a few years ago. Nevertheless, they hire, plan, or communicate with the perpetrator and carry out tasks by utilizing the internet. Cyberterrorism gained value after the 9/11 attack. The computer served as a main tool for criminals and terrorists to achieve their ends. This shift from traditional methods of coercion to electronic methods and the overreliance on the internet pose a threat to the modern world.
The looming situation arises when the nation’s security is harshly attacked in order to acquire secret information. This act of terrorism puts the survival of a nation on the verge of collapse. Back in 2007, hackers from Russia cyberattacked Estonia, and news surfaced that this was done with the help of the Russian government; however, they refused it and declared it unauthentic. It is narrated that this attack was apparently made to delete the Russian World War II War Memorial from downtown Estonia. However, all the blame was put on the hackers from Russia. According to reliable sources in Estonia, the attack had the same impact as the Nagasaki attack in 1945. Another cyberattack of similar nature was carried out by nonconformists in Iraq in 2009. They hacked the US drone communication system, which assisted them in observing the videos recorded by the US drones.
Mechanisms of Digital Terrorism:
Numerous procedures are adopted to propagate terrorist activities. The exploitation of social media to disseminate propaganda, mold the opinions of the common man, and recruit members who will further promote their cause. As the number of fake news stories increases, the difference between real and fake news has blurred, and it’s difficult to point out which one is which. Fake news and extremist content are prevalent throughout the planet.
The wrongdoers frequently target prestigious entities, viz, financial institutions and government websites. These attacks put a pause on the smooth functioning of the concerned department. Youth are allured to online hiring as field experts adopt convincing strategies to make them extremists. This surely leads to uneven consequences.
How Digital Terrorism is Corrupting the Minds of Pakistani Youth:
The provocation of digital terrorism is proven as it exploits technological advancements to spread its insidious influence. The Pakistani youth are under great threat, and their survival is at risk as they are persistently exposed to modern menaces. Their creativity and intelligence are diminishing as these are used in the wrong manner. This subversion manifests in the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of a person, leaving lasting impacts on their psyche.
Frequent disclosure of stuff related to digital terrorism means prolonging a sense of depression and insecurity. The data that is shown in the form of graphic images, violent videos, and alarming news fabricates murderous thoughts in readers minds, which somehow puts the wellbeing of youth at outrageous risk. Most people have such strong beliefs about digital terrorism that they find those propaganda machines more reliable and loyal than their peers and family. This whole scenario has created a paranoid feeling, and it eventually builds up a suspicious aura, affecting social cohesion.
This is digital terrorism, which promotes isolation from the surroundings. As a result of this, people find themselves odd and uncomfortable while sitting among numerous people. Today’s generation has highly immersed itself in the artificially created environment of echo chambers, and they spend all day watching that sort of content that reflects their mentality. This withdrawal from the real world diminishes their support networks.
The mentors of cyberterrorism compel everyone to view addictive stuff. The people prefer to have visually pleasing content. This distraction further isolates them from their loved ones. Radicalized peers are poisonous for the survival of a normal person who is not yet exposed to this evil. Criminal-minded acquaintances promote radical ideologies, exert significant influence on their friends, and force them to mold their behavior.
Being a part of a radicalized group gives you a sense of distrust. The targeted person keeps validating his own beliefs, which somehow worsens the situation, making it difficult to break free from the radical mindset. Not only beliefs, the person starts questioning the validity of religious and educational institutions. A sense of hatred escalates to the extent where they start seeing these hubs of knowledge as corrupt and ineffective.
Outpouring radical thoughts brings about major alterations in norms and values. The person thinks his customs are out of date, so he keeps himself away from the blessings of their long-standing traditions. Behaviors and attitudes that were once considered extreme have become normalized, leading to a shift in social dynamics. The radical content often clashes with the values taught by families, creating intergenerational conflicts. The youth find themselves at odds with their family’s beliefs and traditions, further isolating them. Clashes of civilization are the result of digital terrorism.
Most global jihadists disseminate negativity and usually promote radical stuff. Fragile economies occur because of digital terrorism. When the valuable youth of a country become extremists, their hiring companies terminate them as their attitude becomes unbearable for others. Cyber terrorists engage in financial exploitation and fraud. The fear of cyberattacks affects investor confidence and economic growth. The learning process also gets affected by violent stuff. The prevalence of digital terrorism undermines critical thinking. Students become less analytical and more susceptible to radical views.
Keeping in view the above facts, one can conclude that most people are using technology to destroy peace in the world. The number of extremist groups has increased, and it is not showing us the future that we want for our coming generations.
