Irregular migration is one of the most significant global challenges and Pakistan has become a substantial source of migrants, who are seeking better opportunities abroad. By crossing dangerous sea and land routes, or relying on human smugglers network, many Pakistanis start perilous journeys in search of a better lifestyle. Central Punjab districts i.e. Gujrat, Mandi Bhauddin, Sialkot, etc are the hotspot regions, where the ratio of human smuggling is high. Every year, thousands of Pakistanis lose their life to reach their destination countries illegally. Economic hardships and social instability have driven thousands of Pakistanis to risk their life in pursuit of a better future that seems increasingly unachievable in their own country. Higher authorities in collaboration with international partners must understand this issue and take some actionable measures to combat irregular migration.
Pakistan’s economy is struggling and facing significant challenges that hinder its ability to provide economic assistance for its citizens. Unemployment remains at high levels, especially among youth and women. The country’s labor market is marked by a difference between the skills young people possess and the demands of the workforce. This is especially true for university graduates, where education standards often fall short of global standards. As a result, many young Pakistanis find themselves held up in low-paying, temporary, or insecure jobs, without any employment at all. Facing these problems, it is no surprise that many people migrate illegally, thinking that they can find better opportunities abroad, even putting their lives at risk.
Also, the country’s economy has faced challenges. i.e. low growth rates, inflation, and heavy reliance on external debts. Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural sectors, which are major economic contributors, have been declining for years. Rural area youth are often hopeless, with fewer opportunities for their growth. Therefore, they see migration as the only way to escape from their realities and often follow dangerous illegal migration paths due to the limited legal migration ways in a country.
Along with these economic issues, social instability is also a major contributor to the rise of illegal migration. Other factors i.e. Political instability, bad governance, and corruption are promoting hopelessness and frustration among the country’s youth, who see the political system as failing to fulfill their basic needs in their own country.
Human smuggler’s role in facilitating irregular migration from Pakistan is crucial, they assist migrants in seeking better life opportunities in foreign countries. Many people turn towards human smugglers due to limited migration options, hoping to find a safer journey to reach their destination country by illegal means. But the reality is different, these smugglers’ networks often place illegal migrants in difficult situations, charging a heavy amount of money. Furthermore, illegal Migrants are often physically and emotionally abused by these networks. Women and children are the most vulnerable to human trafficking and sexual exploitation during this journey,
which demands efforts for effective global cooperation to control human trafficking and irregular migration.
Pakistan has made improvements in addressing illegal migration through diplomacy and strict actions against culprits who are involved in these organized crimes. Illegal migration is not a problem of one country, it needs collaborative international efforts to curb irregular migration by addressing the root causes of illegal migration. Enforcement of strict border and visa policies is not a long-lasting solution to this issue. Therefore, all stakeholders including international organizations, embassies working in Pakistan, and Government institutions to enhance economic development, education, and create job opportunities for youth in hotspot regions, where the illegal migration ratio is comparatively high.
Also, improvement in the governance system, addressing corruption, and ensuring social stability within the country are important to rebuilding public trust in government institutions. An effective governance and transparent system can help to create an environment where all citizens feel secure and have a stake in their country’s future, which will help to reduce their desire to leave the country.
Most importantly, tackling irregular migration challenges requires major advancement in legal migration ways. Many Pakistanis prefer to migrate legally, but strict visa policies of different countries create challenges. Minister of Foreign Affairs along with Pakistani diaspora in destination countries should collaborate with different embassies to create more easy legal migration opportunities and also provide legal support for migrants once they arrive in their destination countries. This will help to boost Pakistan’s international image.
The economic and social factors behind pushing irregular migration from the country are complex and connected with the country’s major development and governance issues. Tackling these factors requires more than just border control measures or a strict crackdown against human smugglers, it demands comprehensive strategies from all stakeholders that address the root causes of illegal migration in hotspot regions. By international cooperation and long-term commitment to economic and social reforms political stability, and legal framework, Pakistan can curb irregular migration challenges and help many individuals to serve in their home country, without putting their lives at risk.
