On Monday evening, August 19, a heartbreaking accident occurred at Karsaz Road. A fast-moving Toyota Prado was driven in an extremely negligent manner by a woman, and the initial reports suggested that she was intoxicated at the time of the accident. These reports have not been confirmed. The CCTV captured the woman’s car in a damaged state prior to the fatal crash. It reveals that she first hit a white car, causing damage to its rear door, and then collided with two motorcyclists, throwing them to the ground. As a result, it struck five people, including final-year university student Amina Arif and her father, both of whom tragically died. The remaining victims were injured.
A fresh update on this tragic incident has come to light as Abdul Salam, the Karsaz Road accident victim, is in a critical condition and on a ventilator at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Karachi. His family says they haven’t received any help from the government. The accused, Natasha, is the wife of the famous industrialist and is associated with the Gul Ahmed Energy Limited family. After the accident, she tried to flee but was apprehended by the angry mob and handed over to the authorities. Later, she was not produced in court by the police after the accident. Her advocate argued that his client’s mental health was not stable and that she was receiving treatment at the Jinnah hospital, but hospital records show she was discharged as fit after medical evaluations, and doctors concluded that no immediate psychiatric intervention was necessary.
With reference to recent news, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori on Thursday (August 23) promised a transparent investigation into the Karsaz accident case, in which an SUV driver ran over and killed a man and his daughter earlier this week. He promised the grieving family that justice would be done and assured them of a fair investigation into this tragic incident. He also expressed his deep sympathy and pledged to stay in contact with the family, offering his full support as they seek justice for their loved ones. He told reporters, “We will ensure that justice is served. All eyes are on the judiciary now; it is the judiciary’s duty to deliver justice, and it must be seen to be done. I appeal to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court to personally oversee this case,” and the police have also formed a special investigation team to probe the Karsaz accident case.
Now the woman has been the subject of rumors on different social media platforms suggesting that powerful and influential individuals are “protecting” her after her court appearance. If this is true, it is shocking but not unexpected. This incident has raised concerns again over accountability as the wealthy often evade justice in such cases, and regrettably, our criminal justice system is worthless and truthless because we live in a country where the law is applied differently depending on one’s social and economic status. The interpretation and enforcement of the law seem entirely separate for the wealthy and the poor. In the past, similar incidents have occurred repeatedly, to mention an example: the case of Majeed Achkzai, who hit and ran over Traffic Sergeant Haji Attaullah at Quetta’s GPO Chowk. There is little or no evidence that individuals of status, power, or wealth have been held accountable according to the law. For such individuals, the law is often manipulated. Now the question arises: What will happen with Natasha Danish? But this Karsaz crash needs a fair and just ending.
To conclude, the rich and powerful are often seen as above the law. Let us see if the law will deliver justice or if justice will remain questionable, but the state must ensure a prompt and equitable resolution to the Karsaz tragedy. It is essential for justice to be served to everyone equally.
