The 16th martyrdom anniversary of Sheikh Abdul Aziz (the senior Hurriyat Kashmiri leader) is being observed today. Sheikh Abdul Aziz was martyred on August 11, 2008, by Indian troops when he was leading a march from Srinagar to the Line of Control against the economic blockade of the Kashmir Valley by the Hindu extremists of Jammu. This economic blockade by the extremist Hindus aimed at killing the Kashmiri population by starvation and this targeted killing of the frontline Kashmiri resistance leader have been part of India’s nefarious game plan because India has never been serious about resolving the Kashmir issue as it has been using brutal force as a strategy to quell the struggle of Kashmiris.
Aziz was a strong advocate of the right to self-determination of Kashmiri people and believed that an independent plebiscite under UN supervision could bring long-lasting peace to South Asia. The sacrifice given by the martyred leader Sheikh Aziz will be remembered forever in the history of freedom fighters, as he was a staunch and committed freedom fighter who provided his unwavering services for the cause of Kashmiri people with diligence and devotion while working on different fronts, and he even gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life for that cause, which he promoted throughout his life. He was buried at Marty’s Graveyard in Eidgah Srinagar on August 12, 2008.
The precious lives, sacrifices, and every drop of blood being spilled on the streets of Kashmir by the leaders and people of Kashmiris for the noble cause would be remembered forever and written in the annals of history. It would continue to inspire the next generation of Kashmiris who believe in freedom and justice, and India would fail to stop them from exercising their right to self-determination.
