Manipur (a state in the northeastern part of India), also called the ”Jewel of India” witnessed a horrifying incident on May 4, 2023, but came to light more than 70 days later due to their viral video. The horrific video shows that two women were stripped naked and paraded, they were being dragged and groped by a mob of men who were pushing them into a field. The women were weeping and wincing in pain, and they were begging their attackers to have some mercy on them, but while they groped, it was disturbing to watch. After the video went viral, thousands of people protested, including the majority of women. They demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the sexual assault of two women.
These two women were from the Kuki-Zo community, as per the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, which is a tribal organization in Manipur. One woman told the press that the men who assaulted them were a part of a Meitei mob that had earlier torched their village. In her words, through a phone from Manipur, “They forced us to remove our clothes and said we would be killed if we didn’t do as told. Then they made us walk naked. They abused us. They touched us everywhere on our breasts, our genitals,” she added, adding that both were then led into a field and sexually assaulted.” This sexual assault caused an outcry, but there is no place for such heinous acts in our society, as it not only contains gender-based violence but also a violation of human rights.
