United Nations General Assembly established the World Day against Trafficking in Persons in 2013 and every year on July 30 it is observed to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking, highlight the dilemma of victims, and promote and protect their rights. Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and a violation of human rights. It is a transnational crime and a form of modern-day slavery through force, deception, and exploitation of people for various purposes. According to the UN definition of trafficking in persons, it is “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of people through force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit.”
Historical Background:
Human trafficking has remained a critical issue for decades so the efforts to address the issue gained momentum in the 21st Century hence in 2002 the UN adopted the Palermo Protocol to prevent the trafficking of persons which set a legal framework for addressing the issue. Various events, campaigns to educate the public worldwide, and stronger policies and laws were made to prevent it. In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution (A/RES/68/192) declaring July 30 as World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
This move aimed to heighten awareness, spur action, and highlight the vital role of the global community in eradicating human trafficking. It built upon the 2010 Global Plan of Action, which emphasized the importance of incorporating anti-trafficking efforts into the UN’s broader development and global security initiatives.
