The Chittisinghpora massacre

The scars of the Chittisinghpora massacre, which took place on March 20, 2000, continue to haunt the residents of the village in South Kashmir.

Each year, Sikhs from across the valley gather to pay homage to the 37 Sikh men who were brutally killed on that fateful day. The massacre, carried out by unidentified gunmen, left an indelible mark on the community and raised questions about justice and accountability. 

The army initially attributed the massacre to the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, but subsequent investigations cast doubt on this narrative. The Pathribal Fake Encounter Case further muddied the waters, with locals alleging that the police were involved in both incidents.

Despite efforts by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to indict members of the Rashtriya Rifles for their role in the killings, justice has remained elusive for the victims and their families.

Eyewitnesses recount the horrors of that tragic evening, describing how armed men descended upon the village and mercilessly gunned down innocent civilians, including teenagers and policemen.

The deliberate timing of the attack, coinciding with the conclusion of evening prayers, suggests careful planning and coordination. The wounds inflicted by the massacre run deep, with survivors and relatives still grappling with the trauma and loss.

The community’s demand for justice has been met with indifference and apathy, with no meaningful progress made in the investigation.

Despite their persistent efforts to seek accountability, they have been met with empty promises and false assurances. The pain and anguish of the victims’ families are compounded by the lack of closure and the absence of acknowledgment of their suffering.

Despite the tragic events of that fateful day, Chittisinghpora remains a beacon of hope, where Muslims and Sikhs coexist peacefully. Their refusal to be divided or driven from their homes by fear is a testament to their courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

As the anniversary of the massacre approaches each year, the wounds of the past are reopened, reminding the community of the injustice and suffering they have endured.
